Peru is in a phase of transformation with the implementation of 10 infrastructure mega projects that promise to revolutionize the national economy. These initiatives, valued at more than $13 billion, have the potential to close significant gaps in various sectors, thereby increasing the country's competitiveness and productivity.

Mega projects are underway, from port and airport expansion to the construction of new transport corridors and power transmission systems. These jobs not only improve connectivity and services in the country, but also promote sustainable development by facilitating access to markets and encouraging investment.

How will these 10 projects benefit the country?

Implementation of the 10 Strategic Plans will have a significant impact on creating formal employment and economic competitiveness in the country.

Silvana Huanqui, an expert at the School of Public Management at the Universidad del Pacífico, explained to Andina that these projects are linked to closing gaps in infrastructure. It will increase the productivity of the country and create employment. In addition, investments in public infrastructure can promote capacity building and close social gaps in the short and medium term.

  1. Chanke Multipurpose Port Terminal: With an investment of $3 billion, the project seeks to improve the country's port capacity. It will be inaugurated in the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit from November 10 to 16, 2024.
  2. Majes Siguas II: At a cost of $654 million, the agricultural project will resume operations in the coming months and will allow 38,500 hectares of agricultural export crops to be irrigated, benefiting 350,000 families.
  3. Bicentennial South Pier Port Terminal: A $731 million investment to expand the docks and improve port facilities to provide the largest cargo capacity terminal on the west coast of South America.
  4. Line 2 of the Lima and Callo Metro: With a cost of 5.346 million dollars, the work is planned to move 660,000 passengers daily and is expected to reach 1.2 million passengers per day in the future.
  5. Expansion of Jorge Chavez International Airport: The $1.2 billion project will double the airport's capacity from 15 to 30 million. The estimated completion date is December 2024.
  6. Transfer links New Yanango-New Huanuco and Mandaro-New Yanango-Carabongo: With $544 million, it will improve electricity transmission.
  7. Solar Highway: A $720 million investment to rehabilitate and upgrade the road connecting Lumbeque, La Libertad and Beura. An estimated two hours will be saved on the trip from Trujillo to Sullana.
  8. Oyaan-Ambo Road: At a cost of 293 million dollars, the project will improve road connectivity and benefit approximately 140,000 people in the regions of Lima, Pasco and Huanuco.
  9. Sincero International Airport: With an investment of $578 million, it will boost tourism and the economy. But the work has been delayed and will be completed by March 2026.
