Yolanda Díaz bets in Rome on the appointment of the European Commissioner for the Social Economy

Rome, June 24 (EFECOM).- Yolanda Díaz, Spain’s Second Vice-President and Minister of Labor and Social Economy, has chosen this Monday “to appoint a European Commissioner responsible for Social Economy for the next legislature”.

Díaz traveled to the Italian capital for the conclusion of the General Assembly of the Organization for Social Economic Europe (SEE), where he explained the Spanish experience, referring to European perspectives of the social economy.

In his first intervention, the minister praised the work of the European Social Economic Institutions: “You are a great international example of the faith that our continent needs today more than ever.”

In addition, he recalled the achievements of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of Europe in the second half of 2023.

Among them he noted that “the Liège Roadmap is an essential guide to a social economy that is an undisputed priority on the European political agenda, regardless of families and political ideologies”; and the Ibero-American Network of Social and Solidarity Economy, with Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Mexico or Guatemala, “to build strong, stable and horizontal relations between Europe and Latin America.”

Regarding the future, Díaz has expressed his desire to “appoint a European Commissioner responsible for the social economy for the next European Parliament, according to the Liège Roadmap promoted by Spain and subscribed to by many Member States”. To renew the Socio-Economic Intercommittee in the European Parliament, supported by more than 100 MEPs from different political groups”.

“We will incorporate the social economy as a cross-cutting element in the union’s industrial, economic and social policies, apply the recommendation in all its dimensions, and ensure a large economic contribution and table for a European action plan. The economy is social,” he said.

“We will do our best to launch new projects that provide adequate funding for the development of the sector at the European level, and we will push for the creation of an academy to promote cooperation at the European level,” he added.

Also, “We will continue to work to make the social economy a strategic axis in the coordination of budgetary, economic and social policies within the framework of the European Semester, and to integrate the social economy as a strategic line in European external action.”

Díaz, who wanted to congratulate Juan Antonio Petrino on his re-election as president of SEE, will also participate in the debate “Cooperative movement in the social economy.
