From next December 20, when the ‘invisible roads’ where 5G networks will be put into circulation, Colombia will begin to take shape with the implementation. These connections will bring speeds up to 100 times faster than current 4G on cell phones.
The first 5G networks will be activated in some capital cities in the first quarter of 2024, while it will continue to be deployed in more places throughout the year.

“In two years, 52 percent of the Colombian population should already have 5G coverage,” ICT Deputy Minister Gabriel Jurado said in EL TIEMPO. More than 2,100 kilometers of roads should have such high-speed access.

What do the manufacturers say?
Brands such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, Oppo, TCL, Vivo and Honor are already offering 5G equipment in Colombia.
Although there are no 5G networks yet, Companies are looking at coming up with equipment that has the option to adapt to different 5G networks if needed. It can be implemented according to the frequency of bidding in the country.
“5G technology is constantly evolving, so it’s important to consider a smartphone that can receive software updates and is ready for future improvements to the 5G network,” says Honor.
Apple, for its part, includes this 5G technology in all its ranges, starting with the iPhone 12, with a multi-band chip for all frequencies.
Motorola already has seven models compatible with 5G, while Samsung has more than 20 different phone models, including the Galaxy Tab S9 models compatible with 5G.
What should you keep in mind?
1. Price
Mobile phones in Colombia range from $700,000 to over eight million pesos without VAT. The difference is in storage capacity, screen size and technology, RAM and amount of materials.
2. Battery life
5G technology will require better energy efficiency. First, mobile networks ‘bounce’ between 4G and 5G depending on availability in your area, and that consumes energy. On the other hand, due to its speed, it will have a lot of use in video games, videos, music, so it will need a good battery. Hopefully over 5,000 mAh.
3. Screen size
A 5G phone should have a screen of at least six inches, with good brightness and contrast. Keep in mind that this will turn your TV, your gaming console, and many other entertainment and work tasks with the same good speeds as 5G.
4. Storage
With 5G it will be normal for you to have, receive and send large files (videos, full movies, multiple documents, etc.), so your cell phone should not have a hard drive smaller than 256 GB, with an optional expansion slot with a card.
