According to the official exchange and results of Santiago 2023, Kimberly García completed the trial in 1:12:26 hours, an impossible time for the 20 km walk, as the world record is 1:23:49 and the best time in km is more than 1 : 26 hours.

Evelyn Inga also recorded a time of 1:14:16 to finish third in the trial, ten minutes off her personal best.

We immediately contacted the Peruvian sports authorities in Santiago, and the answer was unequivocal: the track was poorly designed.

According to conversations between officials and coaches, they did not compete for 20 km, but approximately 17.3 km, which is why the time was so short, including twelve walkers who broke the world record and fourteen who completed the trials. They have set a qualification record for Paris 2024.

“The route is not certified and the mark is not a record, obviously,” journalist Patrick Espejo sums up the content for “Diario Récord” in Santiago’s Campo de Marte.

This created discontent among the athletes, as many of them were looking precisely for the mark to qualify for the Olympic Games. Fortunately, both Kimberly Garcia and Evelyn Inga have already secured their spots.

At the very least, the positions achieved are being maintained, meaning that Kimberly Garcia’s gold medal and Evelyn Inga’s bronze medal are confirmed to be added to the national medal tally.

The problem forced officials to re-measure the track, delaying the start of the men’s event, where Peruvians Cesar Rodriguez and Luis Henri Campos compete, the latter seeking the record for Paris 2024.
