Spanish midfielder Sergio Canales’ Rayados de Monterrey drew 1-1 with Tigres UANL this Sunday and qualified for the semi-finals of the Clausura 2024 Mexican football tournament.

Mexican Jordi Cortizó scored for Argentina coach Fernando Ortiz’s Rayados after Tigres had taken the lead through Frenchman Andre Pierre Gignac after Canales started the game.

Argentinian Juan Brunetta was sent off in the 12th minute, and in the 26th minute Gignac latched onto a ball in the area and scored with his right foot to make it 0-1, which leveled the series at the time.

Monterrey changed its face in the second half when Ortiz sent on Jordi Cortizo and Edson Gutierrez.

Argentina’s Maxi Meza and Luis Romo finished from outside to keep Rayados level at 1-1 in the 59th minute. Canales took a shot on goal and the ball hit the crossbar and bounced to the feet of Cortizo, who took a touch and converted with his left foot.

Both teams had scoring chances, but neither moved the scoreboard and Monterey won the series 3-2.

In the semi-finals, Monterrey will face Cruz Azul led by Argentina coach Martin Anselmi, who won the series 4-2 after a 2-2 draw with Pumas UNAM a short while ago.
