Stellandis is building a circular economy hub in the historic Mirafiori factory

Stellantis Automobile Association has launched an advanced Center Circular economy at the well-known Mirafiori complex in Turin, one of Fiat’s largest production centers. The SUSTAINera Circular Economy Hub (CE Hub) will develop a 360-degree approach based on what the team calls the 4R strategy: Reman, Repair, Reuse and Recycle.

The main objectives of this center are to extend the life of components and vehicles and ensure that they last as long as possible. When this is no longer possible, end-of-life materials are collected from remanufacturing and scrapping areas and recycled to produce new vehicles and parts. The CE Hub initially offers four functions that implement the 4R strategy, with the aim of expanding its scope of application.

In remanufacturing (remanufacturing), used, worn or defective components, such as motors, gearboxes and electric vehicle batteries, are removed, cleaned and remanufactured according to the original specifications of the vehicle manufacturers, in pieces, and maintaining the same quality.

The aim is to provide a sustainable and accessible alternative under the SUSTAINera label within the Stellantis spare parts offering. The facility is expected to handle more than 50,000 remanufactured parts by 2025, increasing to 150,000 by 2030.

At the sorting center, about 2.5 million used parts, called embryos (Essential Components), will provide remanufacturing and recycling activities at the facility by 2025, increasing to 8 million by 2030.

As for reconditioning, vehicles are cosmetically and mechanically repaired using new, remanufactured or used parts and then reintroduced through Spoticar, Stellandis’ Manufacturer Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle program and the Stellandis network. You, Sales and Services.

At the end of their life cycle, vehicles become a valuable source of parts that can be remanufactured, reused or recycled. In particular, the original used parts managed by the CE Hub will create available stocks of the B-Parts company to offer the SUSTAINera reuse offer.

The Mirafiori center will create efficiencies and synergies between different areas of operations, Stellantis says in a statement, and will support vertical integration of materials and processes. The Group is building its capabilities, equipment and facilities to transform its consumption model, creating an intelligent and integrated ecosystem aimed at reducing its environmental impact and better managing its decarbonisation objective, which will achieve zero net carbon emissions by 2038.

More investments and employees

40 million euros have been invested in setting up facilities occupying 73,000 square meters, 55,000 of which were reclaimed from a partially unused part of the campus. In the process, more than 5,000 tonnes of metal have been recycled from obsolete assets.

of equipment and machinery Center They were brought in from elsewhere, which represented a 55% savings compared to what it would have cost to get them as new components. The plant has 170 employees, which is expected to increase to 550 by 2025.

Two of Stellandis’ key leaders attended the opening ceremony: John Elkann, its president, and Carlos Tavares, the company’s CEO. “It will be a model plant in the automobile industry that combines environmental respect with economic growth,” the first said.

Tavares, for his part, “The Circular Economy Center brings together a set of capabilities and activities aimed at creating a high-performance hub in Europe,” declared Stellandis CEO Carlos Tavares. “As we grow in this area, we industrialize the recovery and sustainable reuse of materials, and develop new advanced technologies and capabilities.”

“We know that our commitment to remanufacturing, repairing, reusing and recycling will not only reduce pressure on the planet, but also bring financial value to Stellandis, securing our shared future by quickly transforming our production and consumption business model”. First Administrator of the Federation.

The opening of the CE Hub also joins the launch of a technology center in Mirafiori, where internal tests will be carried out and batteries for electric vehicles will be developed. Stellantis’s Circular Economy Business Unit is one of the seven growth businesses cited in the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan and aims to generate revenues of more than 2 billion euros by 2030.
