They promote waste reduction; Circular economy platform launched

Residents of the capital generate 800 grams to one kilogram of garbage per day, so experts feel it is important to reduce waste generation through responsible consumption.

So, together with the plastics industry, they created the Circular Life website, where they provide information on how to reduce, reuse, recycle and recover solid waste.

Romina Dávila, spokeswoman for Vida Circular, pointed out that through responsible consumption, each person can stop producing at least 50% of the waste they produce.

If capital households start valuing their waste, he said, they can create a circular economy that helps with household costs.

“What we are looking for with circular living is to make the circular economy known for the benefit of the environment and society, people interested in all these topics can find various information about the circular economy, “they can be implemented” by various strategies such as reuse, recycling, responsible consumption and these products that can get a life after being discarded by us as consumers. To collaborate with the circular economy as a know-it-all,” he said.

The Circular Life platform contains information on sustainable consumption, consumer habits, sustainable packaging, the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover).

Dávila pointed out that one type of waste that is difficult to treat is used clothing.

“One of the strategies that can be implemented to be part of the circular economy is reuse, recycling and responsible consumption; I think it can go a long way in the sense of how we each want to cooperate, trying to get the products we need,” he revealed.

In Mexico City, about 12,400 tons of organic and inorganic solid waste is generated every day.

Also, 16 thousand tons of construction waste.

Currently, with the zero waste policy, the Mexico City government is able to recycle about 47% of its waste.

Dávila believes that the success of a circular economy lies in the proper separation of waste from the household.

“It is within us to separate the waste into recyclable organic and inorganic categories so that this waste can be sent to the different collection and recycling markets that exist, and that is where we as citizens or consumers make a difference,” he said.

Actions that can be taken from home include fixing before throwing away and creating a shopping list to promote conscious consumption.

Recycling and proper separation of waste should be encouraged, and the possibility of sharing certain materials to extend their useful life should also be considered.

Actions to be taken

at home

  • Consume with awareness and think carefully about what you buy
  • Reduce reuse recycle
  • Give things a second life

in stores

  • Prefer post-consumer recycling, such as bottles made from recycled resins
  • Use biodegradable packaging
