Here’s what the competition rules say: “Clubs qualifying for the final play-offs will play round-trip matches. The club with the highest score in the accumulated standings will have the right to choose the local.

“The club with the most points in these two games of the final will be declared the national champion of League 1 2023.”

“In the event of a tie at the end of two games in the final, the club with the best goal difference will be declared the national champion. In the event of a tie, the winner will be decided by a penalty shootout according to the Laws of the Game.

Universitario de Deportes and its arch-rivals, two-time champions Alianza Lima, drew 1-1 this Saturday in the first leg of the 2023 Peruvian First Division title race at a packed Monumental Stadium in the capital.

The ‘U’s opened the scoring with 63 runs on penalties in a match where the team got the better of Alianza Lima, the back-to-back champions of the Peruvian football competition in 2021 and 2022.

The ‘Creams’ were on course to win the match, but at the end of the match (90+4), Uruguay’s naturally Peruvian Gabriel Costa gave up the win.

About 65,000 fans and spectators of both teams filled the monument in Lima.

The return match is set for next Wednesday, November 8, at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, the stronghold of the ‘Allianzistas’, to decide the champion of the 2023 tournament.

Uruguay coach Mauricio Lariara, of Alianza Lima, admitted his opponents were “superior” and “the responsibility lies with the coach”.

“We achieved a very valuable result based on the agitation and commitment of the players in a difficult match for us,” he said.

The nearly 100-year-old Universitario team was last crowned champion in 2013. Alianza reached the final of the 2023 tournament as champions of the Apertura, while Universitario managed to become champions of the Clausura. The last classic for the title was in 2009.
